Meta launches Muse agent that can chat, plan and even complete purchases for users

Meta has launched Muse, a personal AI agent embedded in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, rolling out free to US adults first, with plans to bring it to Meta's AI smart glasses (no timeline given).
- Capabilities: converses like a person and acts autonomously—messaging friends, planning nights out, and shopping; it goes beyond product discovery to navigate checkout and pay on the user's behalf, presenting the total in-chat for approval before completing the purchase.
- Data access: can connect to Facebook/Instagram accounts and read DMs with permission; on WhatsApp, end-to-end encryption restricts it to info users explicitly share.
- Context: OpenAI previously launched (and pivoted away from) Instant Checkout, and Google shipped Universal Cart in May—but Muse positions the agent to transact end-to-end for consumers.
