gralston · x · 2026-10-28
Nick Ralston open-sourced 501(c)(FREE), a free self-hosted back office for US nonprofits and grantmakers, built entirely with coding agents after his nonprofit arm SAIFbio needed it. Key features:
- Fundraising: cash, stock, crypto, in-kind, DAF and IRA QCD gifts; acknowledgment letters per IRS Pub 1771
- Expenses & reporting: Form 990 functional tagging, 1099 vendor tracking, Claude reads uploaded invoices into pending expenses, 990-style exports
- Grantmaking: intake, AI-draftable diligence memos, awards, disbursements, grantee reports
- Program-related investments: funding gate requiring mission-alignment memo, executed instrument, board approval
- CRM: orgs, people, meetings, tickets, plus an AI notes inbox where a human reviews everything before saving
- Integrations: QuickBooks two-way sync, Claude, Resend, Liveblocks, Financial Modeling Prep
It follows his earlier open-source of the venture fund backend VCRM, aiming to let nonprofits drop SaaS costs without losing features.
