Inside GitHub's HydraFusion: HyDRA score routes prompts across multi-model workflows

lee_stott · x · 2026-09-11

Microsoft engineers explain how GitHub Copilot's HydraFusion engine works. Every prompt is scored across 4 dimensions — reasoning depth, code generation complexity, debugging difficulty, and tool orchestration needs — producing a HyDRA score that sets the capability profile and quality bar. Based on that score, the system picks one of 3 execution workflows (rather than one end-to-end model like Auto mode) and assigns the best model at each stage. The thesis: the best model may not be a single model, but dynamic multi-model orchestration delivering frontier-level performance at lower cost.
