Gary Marcus calls for a public boycott of generative AI: no risk plan, time to act
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-09-11
Gary Marcus publishes "The Case for Boycotting Generative AI," arguing the time for a public boycott has come:
- Frontier labs are knowingly doing something irreversible and dangerous without public consent
- Harm is already occurring, and neither labs nor a government too close to industry have serious risk-mitigation plans
- He cites Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger (28M+ views) saying he believes >10% odds AI kills all humans within a decade with no alignment plan on track, and OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki's candid remarks on the unsolved alignment problem
Marcus clarifies he doesn't personally worry much about extinction—humans are too resilient—but sees real, present risks. One of the most radical public positions from the AI-safety camp to date.
