AI Now report: industry-led AI safety frameworks weaken national security
AINowInstitute · x · 2026-09-11
The AI Now Institute released a report warning that industry technologists are using an unsubstantiated AI arms-race narrative and speculative "existential risk" concerns to accelerate military AI rollouts, eroding safety protocols established during the Cold War for nuclear systems. AI companies were granted access to sensitive information and tasked with self-forecasting their own products' risks — a conflict of interest, per Chief AI Scientist Heidy Khlaaf — resulting in untested, unreliable AI entering defense and civilian-critical infrastructure.
