Jan Leike, former OpenAI alignment lead now at Thinking Machines, argues it's time to build institutional mechanisms to pace frontier AI development. He says the industry is locked into an all-out scaling race toward superintelligence, that competitive pressure prevents any company from unilaterally slowing down, and that broadly applicable pacing mechanisms are needed to buy time for safety and alignment mitigations while AI's benefits take years to materialize.
