Zodiac signs show a small real personality effect — but only in people who read horoscopes, 1M-person study finds

Researchers cross-referenced psychometric personality data from 1 million people with zodiac signs and found: (1) a small but statistically significant zodiac effect on personality after controlling for demographics; (2) the observed correlations closely match LLM-generated astrological "stereotypes"; (3) the effect is strongly mediated by horoscope readership — precisely zero among people who never read horoscopes, but around 0.2 SDs among daily readers, on par with or larger than most psychometric associations in social science. The takeaway: astrology "works" through culturally internalized expectations, which LLM stereotypes apparently capture accurately.
