Beej's socket guide, written in 1995 out of annoyance, still the standard after 30 years
blaizedsouza · x · 2026-09-10
In 1995, someone asked Beej how C sockets work. Tired of explaining, he put everything online as a free guide. Three decades later, it remains the definitive socket programming reference, covering TCP, UDP, IPv4/IPv6, non-blocking I/O, select() and poll(). It's assigned in graduate OS courses worldwide, is funnier than most tech books, and will stay free forever.
