Phillip Isola: Study How Big Models Solve Tasks, Don't Race Them on New Benchmarks

MIT professor Phillip Isola responded to Michael Black's question about the role of academic computer vision research in the age of powerful large models.
His suggestion: work less on solving tasks and more on understanding the solutions — a paper analyzing how Astra + open models work may have more lasting impact than one chasing a new task those models will inevitably solve.
