Mechanize: The future of AI is already written — humans are a stream, not a ship captain

Mechanize (Matthew Barnett, Tamay Besiroglu, Ege Erdil) argues that the choice between fully autonomous agents and mere assistive tools is false: autonomous agents will inevitably be built because of their immense utility. To a first approximation, civilization's technological path is predetermined by physical constraints and economic incentives — humanity is a stream flowing down a valley, not a ship captain. Bans and accelerations only delay the inevitable. The framework also explains why different labs achieve similar breakthroughs at nearly the same time.
