UCLA engineers off-the-shelf T cells from cord blood that curb solid tumors in mice

UCLA researchers developed a platform to mass-produce ready-to-use engineered T cells from donated cord blood stem cells, targeting a protein common to many solid tumors without per-patient customization. All cells carry the same single tumor-targeting receptor, avoiding graft-versus-host disease risk. In mouse models of ovarian cancer and melanoma, a single dose controlled tumors and extended survival, outperforming conventional donor T cells, which caused toxic side effects.
