pzakin reflects on how the 2023 Twitter commentariat dismissed AI coding challengers, assuming GitHub was untouchable on brand and first-mover advantage. The underappreciated factor was shipping velocity: Cursor's rapid Composer launches opened a window to steal share and own the vanguard narrative. GitHub has seemingly caught up on features, but the brand perception stuck. Having coined "purveyor of the state of the art" a year ago, the author now finds no AI coding product worthy of that description.
