Stanford launches CS329Z, a full course on engineering AI agents from RAG to multi-agent systems

Stanford's new Fall 2026 course CS329Z "Engineering AI Agents", taught by Diyi Yang, Michael Ryan, and John Yang, covers the full agent engineering stack: RAG, tool use, agent loops, MCP, memory, multi-agent systems, evals, and coding agents. Students build core components from scratch before learning how frameworks like DSPy abstract them, then complete two applied assignments and a quarter-long project. The course frames everything around three engineering challenges of compound AI systems: decomposition, data, and evaluation.
