Scientific American: AI may have solved a million-dollar math problem, a Deep Blue moment

Scientific American reports that AI may have solved one of the six open "million-dollar" Millennium Problems: proving the equations governing fluid motion are fundamentally flawed. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster called it "a Deep Blue–Kasparov moment" and urged the math community to have serious, unhurried discussion about what comes next.

Attribution, however, is contested: Buckmaster says he and Levent Alpöge, a mathematician and Anthropic employee, made significant progress last month, but before they could publish, OpenAI's competing work surfaced, igniting a priority dispute.
