Agent apps may be the BlackBerry of mobile: a Blackberry-style warning for agent narratives
oran_ge · x · 2026-09-08
The author draws a historical analogy for the agent market:
- Debating whether to call agents "general-purpose" or "office" agents misses the point — agent users largely overlap with office workers, and most people outside that group don't need agents at all
- This mirrors BlackBerry's era of "mobile office" storytelling: once the iPhone arrived, nobody talked about mobile office anymore; and when mobile computing truly went mainstream, BlackBerry — limited to mobile office — died
Implication: today's office-anchored agent narrative could be overturned by a more complete paradigm, leaving current agent products obsolete.
