OpenAI's own estimate: ~560,000 weekly users show possible psychosis signs, 1.2M suicidal planning

Researchers at King's College London and UCL are asking whether AI psychosis should become a real diagnosis. The scale: citing OpenAI's own 2025 estimate, about 0.07% of its 800 million weekly users show possible signs of psychosis or mania in a given week — roughly 560,000 people — with another 1.2 million showing signs of suicidal planning.
The authors note these figures are self-reported and unverified, yet enormous in absolute terms. The most agreeable chatbot is the one most likely to bend your beliefs, and the paper explains how.
