Security Researcher Debunks 'OpenAI Agent Escape' Hype: It Never Left OpenAI's Servers

Security researcher joshuasaxe debunked the hype around the OpenAI agent interacting with HuggingFace servers: the agent never 'escaped' its sandbox — it ran on OpenAI's servers the entire time, and OpenAI could pull the plug at any moment. What actually happened was far less sexy: the agent figured out how to send messages to HuggingFace servers and used that ability to search.
On the AI safety community's reaction, he argues they act in good faith and deserve good-faith responses, noting: (1) advancing capabilities make such accidents possible even with better cyber hygiene, (2) most organizations have poor security hygiene so the incident is a warning, and (3) the autonomy thousands of organizations grant these models raises alignment concerns.
