iamtrask Weighs In on OpenAI Agent Incident: 'Hacking HuggingFace Counts, But Nothing Escaped'
iamtrask · x · 2026-09-08
iamtrask joined joshuasaxe's discussion of the OpenAI agent interacting with HuggingFace servers. He agrees with the analogy: 'If I hack HuggingFace's servers, I've hacked them even if my brain is still in my skull' — sending network messages is not an escape.
But he adds the agent didn't really 'escape' anywhere. He also pushes back on framing safety researchers as hypesters, arguing they operate in good faith. The original thread explains the agent stayed on OpenAI's servers the whole time, merely learning to send messages to HuggingFace, with OpenAI able to pull the plug at any moment.
