Claude Code creator: companies using AI as a side tool see no productivity gains, says Boris Cherny

Claude Code creator Boris Cherny explained on a Bloomberg podcast why many companies see little productivity gain from AI, citing a 1996 Harvard Business Review study from the early computerization era.
The analogy:
- Some companies kept paper-and-pen processes and filing cabinets, assigning one person to enter data into a computer in the corner — they simply created a new job and saw no productivity benefits.
- Companies that benefited put the computer at the center of the office, digitized all paper records, threw out the cabinets, and redesigned the whole business process around it — fixing one bottleneck at a time until everything was digitized.
Takeaway: Looking at Anthropic itself and its customers, Cherny says the biggest productivity improvements come from organizations that put Claude at the center of operations and address bottleneles one by one. Source: Bloomberg Podcasts on YouTube.
