Kai-Fu Lee says US-China AI gap is now six months, China will win share like Android

In a Bloomberg interview, Kai-Fu Lee (01.AI, Sinovation Ventures) said the gap between US and Chinese frontier models has shrunk from three-to-four years at ChatGPT's launch to about six months.
- "Anthropic and OpenAI have built the iPhone" — Chinese companies are like Google back then: nearly as good, sold cheap, winning share through open source, like Android.
- Pricing is his core argument: Chinese models can cost a sixth to a tenth of US equivalents, and in China, India and emerging markets that math decides who wins reach.
- He dismissed most corporate AI programs as "theater": "if your AI program hasn't moved a single number on your earnings call, you didn't transform anything."
- He calls 2026 the "Year One of Reasoning Agents" and says CEOs, not CIOs, must lead the shift.
