A co-author of the new matrix multiplication exponent paper clarifies credit: Julia Stadlmann's Aug 31 preprint was the fundamental breakthrough — the first improvement on 246 since 2014, with ideas entirely hers. The team's 212 bound came afterward by running tooling built for their Lean formalization on her framework, detailed in Appendix A. Her postdoc mentor Jesse Thorner is a co-author and joined only after her preprint went public.
