- Code as data: von Neumann realized that doing something and the instructions for doing it could be encoded in the same machine in the same language — paralleling how protein production and its instructions coexist in one organism
- Feedback loops: the results of doing something can change the instructions for doing it, an essential feature of biology that only a mathematician skilled at generalization recognized
The author adds that von Neumann's familiarity with Gödel and Turing let him see that execution and provability live at different abstraction levels — separating the process from the possibility, an advantage biologists lacked.
