Ghana RCT: WhatsApp AI math tutor delivered 0.37 effect size across 1,000 students

Cited in a debate on AI tutoring, an arXiv study evaluates Rori, a WhatsApp-based conversational math tutor, across 1,000 students in grades 3-9 at 11 Ghanaian schools. Treatment students did two 30-minute weekly AI sessions for 8 months alongside regular classes, achieving significantly higher math growth with an effect size of 0.37 (p < 0.001). Working on basic phones over low-bandwidth networks, the approach shows strong potential for personalized learning in low- and middle-income countries.
