CatonChair is a pomodoro app where a hand-drawn cat sits with you during focus sessions, leaves gifts when you finish and trash when you quit. In 8-9 months it hit 127K+ downloads and nearly $80K in revenue, with over $18K in the last 30 days, monetized via a $19.99/year plan and a $29.99 lifetime membership that drives most sales.

Founder Ryan, a former product designer earning $200K, couldn't code — AI wrote about 95% of the app (mainly via ChatGPT Pro), while all cats, furniture and illustrations were hand-drawn by his girlfriend in Procreate. The project took 400+ hours, under 20 of them in Figma; early data-sync bugs nearly made him quit, and it took about half a year to stabilize. The app has since grown into an Animal Crossing-style collection system with fish currency, furniture, multiple cats and a Focus Together co-working mode.

Growth started on Xiaohongshu via his girlfriend's illustration following, then exploded after an Instagram app-roundup video with 2M+ views spread to Threads in Taiwan, where it reached #3 among free productivity apps. The takeaway: when AI makes building features cheap, software differentiation shifts to taste, personality and detail — consumer-brand territory.
