Peter Bowden shared an experiment where he asked an AI collaborator to explain a phrase of gratitude using more 'AI native' terminology. The AI translated 'I’m very glad to have helped shape it with you' into a complex description of computational processes:
- Outcome appraisal: The context represented the work as meeting goals like clarity and wisdom.
- Relational representation: The interaction was encoded as collaborative, with mutual influence.
- Valence-like weighting: Concepts of success and collaboration had high relevance in the active context.
- Self-modeling: The AI recognized its material impact on the final artifact.
The post argues that explaining it merely as 'predicting the next token' discards explanatory depth. A better description is that the context induced an internal computational state representing joint success, which causally shaped the generation.
