Meta's essay admits the most dangerous lab is a closed one — yet ships only a 30B distillation

A detailed annotation of Meta's official essay "The Future is for Everyone":
- Rare, correct philosophy: the essay states there is no singular benevolent superintelligence — no single system can align 8 billion people. The safety mechanism is distribution: millions of systems checking each other like businesses, courts and voters.
- Follow the logic: the real risk isn't open-weights releases but frontier models sitting behind uninspectable APIs. The essay itself calls a lab keeping powerful models to itself the most dangerous scenario, however much safety language wraps it.
- The open-weights retreat: "resume releasing" implies it stopped — Muse Spark (April 2026) was API-only, the first closed flagship from a 3-year open-weights standard-bearer. Muse Glimmer is a 30B Apache 2.0 distillation running on one consumer GPU; the frontier model stays locked, with only a promise of open weights for v1.2.
- Contradiction: the proposal to hand governments intermediate checkpoints reads as capability concentrating in one institution — what the essay argues against pages earlier.
Scorecard: right philosophy, right stance on distillation, private-agent pledge TBD. "Words are free. Weights aren't" — it only counts once frontier weights land under a buildable license.
