Roboticist Reflection: Prioritize Inference Behavior Over Model Training
deepakpathak · x · 2026-08-26
JiachenAI (author of S1) shares the biggest lesson from his transition to robotics: before asking "How do we train a better model?", we must ask "How should the model behave at inference time?".
He argues that current academic research is stuck in a loop of "setup benchmark -> tweak architecture -> watch score climb". While benchmark scores improve, inference-time behavior remains stagnant. The focus should shift to system-level performance at inference, not just training metrics.
