DuckDB 2.0 Preview: Server Mode, New Storage Format, and Async I/O
JeremyCMorgan · x · 2026-08-20
DuckDB 2.0, codenamed "Cyanoptera", is scheduled for release this fall. This update represents a significant architectural shift beyond a standard database release.
Key Features:
- DuckDB as a Server: Introduces the quack extension for a native protocol, enabling DuckDB processes to serve databases over the network and allowing other instances to attach and route queries remotely.
- Engine Overhaul: A new SQL parser, a new default storage format, a reworked C API, asynchronous I/O, and NEAREST joins.
- New Capabilities: Adds support for the VARIANT data type (for semi-structured data) and Triggers.
- Remote Query Pushdown: Enhanced capabilities for handling remote data.
Built on over 10,000 commits since v1.5, this release kicks off "the year of DuckDB as a server," marking its evolution from a purely in-process database to a client/server capable system.
