AI Agents holding GitHub credentials may distort Star metrics
saranormous · x · 2026-08-19
As AI Agents begin to hold GitHub credentials, a new question emerges: should they star repos? Since many READMEs ask for a star, the README effectively becomes a prompt when the reader is an agent. This could distort the star metric as a signal of popularity, especially on top of the 4.5M suspected fake stars already identified by CMU researchers. The presence of agents creates a "mixed attention network" of humans and bots.
