Security researcher Tal Beery published an analysis titled "The Nearest Neighbor Attack: A Unicorn or an Iceberg?", revisiting the only publicly documented case of one of the most sophisticated Wi-Fi-based APT attacks — a technique where attackers compromise an organization physically adjacent to the target and pivot into the victim's network over Wi-Fi (first detailed publicly by Volexity in 2023).
The "unicorn or iceberg" framing asks whether this single sighting reflects genuine rarity or an undetected iceberg of similar intrusions. His core argument: AI will make such attacks worse, as automation lowers the barrier for these multi-step, proximity-dependent intrusions that once demanded significant manual tradecraft.
