Viral AI sparks biosecurity debate: sparking a pandemic is easier than defending one

After publishing his phage genome generation paper, Stanford researcher Brian Hie shared personal thoughts on biosafety and biosecurity, arguing that the trajectory of generative biology warrants both urgency and optimism. Genomics professor Anshul Kundaje amplified a detailed analysis by Egan Peltan.

Peltan lays out a fundamental asymmetry: on offense, a single virus can spark a pandemic; on defense, a single antiviral intervention takes months of work, state-scale resources, and social cooperation. He is skeptical that LLMs or "viral AI" will meaningfully change that dynamic.
