AI pioneer Jürgen Schmidhuber took to X to share a piece of AI history, noting that the first modern backprop-trained CNN for vision was published in Japan in 1988. Chinese researcher Wei Zhang later brought it to Silicon Valley, earning FDA approval in 1998 for radiology's first AI, which now reads over 10 million mammograms annually in the US.
