AI Engineering is Becoming Alchemy: A Reflection on Cognitive Extension
zakelfassi · x · 2026-08-14
The author argues that AI engineering is starting to look like a mix of alchemy and exorcism. From the outside, the chaotic combination of models, agents, and testing harnesses looks like "AI psychosis."
However, from the inside, the engineer is becoming a gardener: rather than inspecting every line of code, they learn the dynamic equation between the model, the environment, and the data. When the machinery gets complex enough, the engineering process itself becomes a ritual. The job is no longer just about pushing diffs and waiting for CI; it's about receiving signals, dispatching workflows, and constantly rebuilding mental models to adapt to new AI behaviors. This obsession with understanding complex machinery is an inevitable form of cognitive extension.
