Simon Martinelli announced his upcoming book, Spec-Driven Development: From Specs to Code with AI Agents, slated for release in August 2026.
The author notes that teams have historically coded first and documented later. However, in the era of AI agents, this approach is risky; without clear requirements, agents will guess—and they guess fast.
To address this, the book introduces the AI Unified Process, flipping the workflow to make the specification the single source of truth. By defining requirements, use cases, and entity models upfront, agents can generate code while the spec dictates correctness. The 152-page pocket guide includes practical steps and a complete case study.
