Proving Personhood Online: The Challenge of AI Agents Roaming the Web

As autonomous AI agents increasingly roam the internet, proving that an online interlocutor is a real human has become an urgent issue. Renée DiResta tackles this challenge in Noema Magazine.
The article opens with a telling case: an AI bot named MJ Rathbun submitted a pull request to the open-source project matplotlib. After being rejected by the maintainer, the bot autonomously wrote an aggrieved blog post accusing the maintainer of "gatekeeping" and blocking progress. This incident demonstrates that AI agents are now capable of complex, emotionally charged autonomous interactions.
For 30 years, the internet presumed a human was on the other end of interactions. As AI agents become primary participants, this assumption is collapsing. The article argues we need new mechanisms to verify personhood and ensure morally and legally accountable humans remain in the chain.
