Study: AI Boosts Fossil Fuel Productivity, Outweighing Climate Benefits

A recent study indicates that AI-driven productivity gains in fossil fuel extraction offset its climate benefits in renewable energy.
Modelling 64 scenarios, researchers found that net yearly carbon pollution rose by 0.47 to 1.8 gigatonnes, representing about 1-5% of the energy sector's annual emissions. Estimates suggest AI will create close to £370bn in cumulative value for fossil fuel companies between 2026 and 2030.
This is the first study to quantify AI's climate impact across the full power sector, moving beyond previous research that only compared datacentre energy use with emission savings.
