AI safety researcher David Krueger points out two basic reasons we might pause AI development too late:
- The "Runaway train effect": It takes longer than we expect to stop after we start hitting the brakes.
- The "Wile E. Coyote effect": We don't know where the cliff is, and we go over the edge without even realizing it.
