Google Missed the AI Coding Boat: DeepMind Talent Exodus & Delays

giffmana · x · 2026-08-11

In response to a Fortune report attributing the exit of DeepMind’s CEO to low morale, a talent exodus, and model delays, tech blogger Bill Gurman offered sharp commentary.

He pointed out a critical timing discrepancy: if Googlers believe last summer was the start of Gemini missing the coding agent boat, they are already behind. Coding agents had already started in labs the winter before that, meaning training for coding happened even earlier. Furthermore, products like Cursor had already proven the potential of this direction in the market. This reflects the slow response of major tech companies in capturing cutting-edge trends.
