Open-Source Models Cut Inference Costs 8x, Compute Becomes New Bottleneck
latticecut · x · 2026-08-11
Meryem Arik, co-founder of a UK AI startup, told BBC that open-source models deliver similar capabilities with a 4–8× cost advantage, making data-heavy AI applications far more accessible. However, cheaper models don’t remove the infrastructure bottleneck. Compute remains scarce, GPU costs are rising, and the UK struggles to build data centres. The next AI divide will be less about who has the best model and more about who can afford and build the capacity to run it.
