Micron Exec: AI Demand Drives 5-Year Binding Prepaid Chip Supply Agreements
BenBajarin · x · 2026-08-11
Analyst Ben Bajarin shared insights from Micron executive Sumit Sadana, highlighting how AI demand is fundamentally transforming the memory chip business model.
- SCAs vs. LTAs: Historical Long-Term Agreements (LTAs) were merely non-binding 12-month handshakes. To meet urgent, multi-year AI demand, Micron pioneered the "Strategic Customer Agreement" (SCA).
- Strict and Long-term: SCAs typically span 5 years (through the end of 2030) and are legally binding. They dictate annual purchase volumes on a take-or-pay basis, with no contractual outs for customers.
- Upfront Cash Backing: These commitments are backed by tremendous amounts of upfront cash and letters of credit, landing directly on Micron's balance sheet and providing unprecedented long-term visibility.
