Data reveals that a $1 million grant from 2023 at Anthropic is now worth approximately $51 million today after adjusting for dilution, compared to about $16 million for a similar grant at OpenAI.
This divergence stems from their initial valuation gaps: OpenAI was already valued at around $30B in 2023, whereas Anthropic was trailing at roughly $4B. Since then, Anthropic's valuation has skyrocketed 235x, accompanied by roughly 78% equity dilution. Industry observers note that many staff engineers at Anthropic have consequently earned more over the past four years than 99% of founders.
