Why AI Excels at Math but Struggles with Conceptual Breakthroughs in Other Fields

Addressing the question of whether AI has achieved major breakthroughs in domains outside of mathematics, AI safety researcher Owain Evans offers his analysis.
He suggests that compared to fields with strict verification like math, AI's progress in fuzzier domains might be delayed by about 4 months. In these areas, AI can indeed provide meaningful insights, but they are often buried among many mediocre ideas. Human experts must sift through these candidate ideas and might need a week of focused work to validate a single AI-generated insight. This high verification cost makes it difficult for AI-driven conceptual breakthroughs in cross-disciplinary fields to be quickly recognized.
