Yuval Harari: AI Algorithms Have Hacked Human Attention

AryHHAry · x · 2026-08-11

Yuval Harari noted in a conversation with Ezra Klein that evolution programmed humans to react quickly to threats (snakes) and opportunities (berries). AI algorithms have now "hacked" this mechanism, continuously capturing our attention through infinite social media scrolling.

Citing multiple academic studies, the author adds that social media AI leverages reinforcement learning. Through infinite scroll, personalization, and intermittent reinforcement (like occasional likes or new content), algorithms create an "evolutionary mismatch," trapping users in addiction much like animals foraging for food.
