Stanford economist Chad Jones has published a paper titled AI and Our Economic Future in the Journal of Economic Perspectives (JEP).
The essay explores the implications of machines—AI for cognitive tasks and advanced robots for physical tasks—becoming capable of performing all human tasks, making three main points:
- Potential Growth Acceleration: Although US growth rates have been stable at roughly 2% per year for 150 years, automating intelligence could distinctly lead to an acceleration in economic growth rates.
- The "Weak Links" Factor: This acceleration is likely to be slowed by "weak links." For instance, despite having 100 million times more transistors on desktop computers today than in the 1970s, humans are not 100 million times more productive.
- It highlights the friction between exponential technological explosions and actual productivity conversion.
