Perplexity Overturns Amazon Ban on AI Shopping Bot on Appeal

The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned an injunction against Perplexity AI's Comet AI agent, allowing it to resume shopping on Amazon.com on behalf of users.

Amazon previously sought to ban the tool, claiming unauthorized access to its computers. However, the court ruled that Perplexity’s AI agent did not directly "access" Amazon's computers; rather, the users did so with the help of the AI. The court noted that even if the agent sends screenshots of Amazon pages back to Perplexity's servers to complete a requested task, it does not qualify as direct access to Amazon's servers. This ruling clears some legal hurdles for agentic commerce but highlights that current website access rules are not yet adapted to an AI-agent-driven environment.
