A scholar proposed a three-step plan to overhaul the peer review process in economics using AI, aiming to fix the notoriously long review cycles.
The proposal includes:
- About five human referees quickly read the paper (within 2-3 weeks) and provide a short assessment of its overall importance and glaring concerns.
- The editor decides based on these paragraphs whether to send the paper to a single expert reviewer or desk reject it.
- A single human expert works with an open-source AI reviewer to prepare a detailed report for the editor's final decision.
Other academics welcomed the idea, noting it would drastically cut the time spent waiting for rejections that simply state the work is 'not important enough'.
