ICML Paper: The Real Challenge for Superintelligence Is Coexistence, Not Capability

xuanalogue · x · 2026-08-10

An upcoming ICML 2026 paper argues that as increasingly capable AI systems are deployed, the world (humans, institutions, other AIs) adapts and pushes back.

The authors contend that the current AI research paradigm treats the world as a stationary feedback source—a 'solipsistic approach.' They warn that a superintelligence built through this approach, while being an extremely capable task solver, is unlikely to be cooperative. Thus, the central challenge has shifted from capability to coexistence.
