Vercel CEO: AI Coding Still Needs Human Review as Models Make Rookie Mistakes

Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch discussed the current state of AI-assisted programming, emphasizing that human intervention remains essential—whether through reading code directly or via "agentic inquiry."
He noted that models are not yet at the “full autonomy” stage and still make rookie mistakes or go down bad architectural paths. For instance, he experienced a top-tier model adding a nonsensical 700ms delay to “settle” something, which the model later admitted was "cargo-culting."
While he believes the need for human review will diminish over time and most code will eventually become assembly-like, developers must still stay vigilant with AI-generated code today.
