Moonshot Defies Odds: Building Frontier Model Kimi K3 with ~500 Staff
OwainEvans_UK · x · 2026-08-10
AI safety researcher Owain Evans marvels at Moonshot's ability to develop frontier models with a remarkably small team. Data indicates that Moonshot, the creator of Kimi K3, operates with only about 400-500 employees, significantly fewer than Anthropic's 5,000 or Google's 200,000.
However, he notes that while smaller teams may have an easier time staying agile and tracking the frontier, developing frontier models still involves immense engineering complexity, including custom training infrastructure, multimodality, and specialized RL environments.
