The Guardian: Demis Hassabis Shifts to Chairman, Ending DeepMind's Era of Independence

According to The Guardian, Demis Hassabis stepping down as CEO to become chairman and Alphabet's chief scientist marks the end of DeepMind's era as an independent actor. The leadership overhaul indicates that the London-based lab has been firmly brought into the orbit of its Mountain View parent company.

DeepMind will now be led by US-based Koray Kavukcuoglu in the non-CEO role of senior vice-president. Former executives noted that moving from a charismatic founder-leader to a technical, non-CEO management role is a clear sign of lost independence. Although Hassabis led historic breakthroughs in Go and protein folding, earning a Nobel Prize, commercial reality has ultimately taken over the top AI lab.
